1990 Nissan 240SX SE Hatchback review from North America
"Reliable, affordable, fun, rear wheel drive sports car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Age. At 12 years old, showing signs of wear, but it still runs like the energizer bunny. The front tension rod bushings starting to deteriorate which would give a high speed rattle. Replaced with polyurethane ones. Had to replace alternator at 160k miles. It is slowly leaking oil at the oil pan, but not a show stopper. I plan to replace the seal when I have time. Tires have to of course be replaced soon. Other than that I can't ask for a better daily commute.
General comments?
Although North America never got to see the 200+hp SR20DET turbo version that would have made this car very popular, it is still a very fun, reliable, and affordable car to own. Since it is based on a truck motor (140hp), these cars can take a fair amount of abuse and neglect and still runs. When it reaches 300k miles, I plan to treat it with a SR20DET transplant though. Unlike many of today's FWD "sports" cars, it still retains the rear wheel drive setup that is the hallmark of a real sports car. Too bad Nissan does not make them anymore (or any manufacturer for that matter that is within a student's budget). The closest we'll get is the upcoming Z, but that is not affordable or lightweight either. I think I'll stick with my 240 for many years to come. The other car I may consider is the old AE86 Corolla which was my previous car that I had stupidly given away. However the Corolla has less power, but better cargo capability. The 2nd gen RX7s I've owned temporarily also is similar, but they are really unreliable.
