1978 MG BGT review from UK and Ireland
"A beautiful and charismatic disaster"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Engine mounts broke
Steering column sheared
Timing forever out.
Rear brakes seized
Leaks in rain
Battery replaced twice
Overdrive failed
Rust
etc
etc.
General comments?
The MGB GT is one of the loveliest and most timeless cars on the road, but it is based on antediluvian technology and neither performs, handles or stops like even the worst car of today.
The B had no rust proofing of any kind and skin rot was a constant battle, the engine was crude, thirsty and unreliable, on its tippy-toes cart springs, the B handles like a crock, and would lose its rear traction in a heartbeat in wet weather. A Ron Hopkinson handling kit helped, but not much.
The interior was a hotch-potch of dials and cheap plastics with poor ventilation.
It would take a much richer and more dedicated man than I to keep a B on the road and performing properly.
Pretty and charismatic, but one of the worst handling, least reliable and slowest cars I have ever owned. Go into ownership with your head not you heart.
