1986 Alfa Romeo 33 QV Green Cloverloaf review from Norway
"A Racer to an affordable price..:-)"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Big end bearings went rattling in the first engine.. (probably caused by hard revving on a cold engine together with old oil)..: (
A nut fell from my home built air filter bracket and into the cylinder and destroyed the valves completely on the 1,7..: ( (
Central locking and power windows failed due to corrosion on the fuses (easy to fix)..
General comments?
Modifications:
-Bought a 1,7 i. e boxer and, but the Weber's from the 1,5 on it.. dunno the hp, but it made my car go really fast!
-Pipercross air filters (WHAT A SOUND!)
-yellow Koni's, lowered 35mm..
This was my first car, and because of that I must say it had to take a good beating from me (i.e revving like a maniac all the time)..
The day I picked this newly painted Alfa Red baby up was a great day in my life. My 33 was original (to my knowledge) when I bougt it except a ANSA sports exhaust with a lovely snear, especially when dropping revs.. And when the 1,7 was inserted with the Pipercrossfilters the sound was Perfect.. Sophisticated in normal traffic and RAW when pushed..=)
Even with original suspention it was a great handler.. but I lowered it 35mm and inserted yellow konis, and had an extreme handler for the price!
It was by far the coolest (not nessecarily fastest, but definatley coolest..:) car I have ever driven, the engine pulled from the bottom, but the action started form 3400 and kept on pulling up to nearly 8000! (no kidding, and the sound over 6500rpm is impossible to explain).. with the 1,7 boxer I had no problems keeping up with a mazda 626 GTI, or an Escort RS Turbo on the straights (both from late 80's with about 140hp) only to round them on the outside in tough corners! (this was on a race track..:) And I crushed a Golf GTI 16v out from a traffic light easily.. (VAG Go home!)
I drove the car for about a year until the fatal engine accident (caused by me : ( ().. I had built a custom air filter bracket fastened with a screw and nut, and the nut went into the engine.. boohoo... And in the process of trying to fix the engine I found a serious rust problem in the floor of the car covered with tectyl..: (this killed my eagerness to fix the car, so I delivered the license plates.. and put the car away.. The fact was that the man who sold it to me had covered a lot of rust under the car with tectyl.. And since my economy was going down the car ended its life beeing sold in parts..: ( (
I still see this as the worst mistake I ever did.. Rest In Peace.
I'd recommend the 33 to anyone. Even though many reviews slaughtered it because of rust and an awkward driving position (easy to fix), it still is a Alfa Romeo, and Alfa Romeo never disapoints when it comes to driving experience!
But be aware of rust and the electrical system! If the engine is treated well it won't let you down..
Forza Alfa Romeo!!
