1992 Chevrolet Blazer S-10 Tahoe 4x4 review from North America
"Like a marriage just take the good with the bad"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
When I purchased the blazer it had a lot of miles on it, but it looked like a car with only 5000 miles on it.
I replaced the shocks, front brake pads, the fan belt, and the tires at 100000 miles.
I also tuned up the engine at the same time.100000 miles.
I noticed a water leak at 100296 miles.
I had a local mechanic look at it I was informed the blazer had a intake manifold leak. Had it fixed and had the mechanic replace the water pump at the same time. Nothing was wrong with the water pump, but at 100000+ miles I figured it was due to go out soon. The mechanic broke my automatic transmission "kick down" cable so I had to had that replaced as well. After a few days I noticed a lot of auto trans fluid (that red stuff) leaking out of the transmission. Took the blazer back to the shop told the mechanic (if you can call him that) what it was doing, leaking huge puddles of trans fluid on my garage floor. The mechanic said it just an "O-ring" seal and supposedly repaired it. No such luck, more huge puddles off trans fluid on the garage floor. This time I made an appointment with a reputable transmission shop about 75 miles away.
Had my dad drive the blazer to the repair shop (I had to be at work that day). about 3 miles from home dad noticed the engine was losing power, so he pulled over and the engine died. Dad let the blazer cool off (the overflow bottle puked about a gallon of antifreeze out after he stopped). when he went to start the blazer a loud bang was heard and a very large cloud off smoke drifted across the road (it blew the oil filler cap off, and across the road). No, it would not start. Dad pulled it home. I had another mechanic from a neighboring town tow it away. The engine blew the #1 piston's top off ruining the block and cylinder head both. Had this mechanic replace the engine at 101341 miles. I also told the mechanic I needed the trans leak fixed.
That mechanic couldn't fix the leak either. more red puddles of trans fluid. At 101453 miles I drove to the trans shop to have the leak fixed that I was supposed to go to before the engine blew up. I noticed at 101000 miles the engine was had to start not when cold, but whrn the engine was warm after driving and when sitting for a few hours. The engine would crank, but not strat easily. I put up with for a while and then took it to the chevy dealer near here. They checked the engine replaced the fuel filter, the starter and fix the horn with was broke when I bought it. The blazer does run better after I got it back from the dealer, but it still cranks, but won't start sometimes.
General comments?
Blazers are fun to drive when they run right. They have a good amount of power for a V-6 engine, the vortec fuel injection helps make more power (looks just like the fuel injection set-up on the 1992 Z/28's). There is fair amount of room inside enough for camping gear or my guitar and amp. There are a ton of rattles and squeaks inside most of it coming from the tailgate. I have a outside mounted tire and I think it wiggles back and forth creating a lot of noise (just crank up the radio and drown it out). The factory stereo is not too bad. Handling is good for a short wheel-based suv (mines the 2 door model). Decent gas mileage about 22 mpg on the highway with no problem driving at 65 mph or so. The four wheel drive is a handy feature and works fine. I like the car when it not causing me problems, I just wish it didn't have so many of them.
