1990 Peugeot 405 SRi review from UK and Ireland
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Misfire developed when I had it serviced by a Ford agent who set the idle speed to 750rpm (on an injection car??) Quickly cured by Hometune, who serviced it from then on.
Wheel bearings failed, front left 52k, front right 66k.
Exhausts only seem to last 18 months or so, probably worth fitting a stainless steel system.
Clutch lasted to 96k when I sold it.
Eight spoke alloy wheels have niggly centre covers which rattle at parking speeds, (also fitted to the GTX), cured by blu tack andor foam spacers.
General comments?
Great chassis, powered by the pre cat 123 bhp engine, feels more like the 130bhp Haynes measures it at. Proper tuning and a clean air filter easily saw to that. The power steering did tend to mean the tyres needed replacement after 20-25k, due to wearing on the shoulders. Rotating the tyres would help, and a strut brace would too. I fitted Bridgestones which had superb grip and it's a small price to pay for a great driving experience. Low insurance group (9) for a sporty car, great cruising ability, loads of room in the back and the boot, despite a high sill (cured by the 1992 model revisions).
Who cares if its plastic interior squeaks or rattles a bit, I was always listening to the engine rasp as I slotted 3rd for yet another overtake.
