1992 Volvo 740 Wagon review from North America

"Solid car, solid performance"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing major has needed to be fixed. The exhaust rusted out, but cost less than $150 and 2 hours to replace with simple tools.

The electrical system has some quirks - the speedometer sometimes jumps around due to a short, and sometimes the power windows don't work.

The fuel filter needed to be replaced as it was too clogged to allow proper fuel flow.

The car needs a new air mass meter, about $200 on the web.

The transmission pan gasket has a slight leak.

General comments?

This car has the most comfortable seats I've ever sat in for 13 hours at a time.

It has great power and cruises well on the highway, and the turbocharger comes in handy when driving in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado.

It has plenty of cargo room - with the seats down I can easily fit my bike inside. I could sleep back there if I had to.

The fuel economy is fair; I average around 20-23 miles per gallon, but the car requires 91 octane.

As with any ten year old car, there are many small maintenance items that can get expensive, such as spark plugs, vacuum lines, fuel filter, air filter, oxygen sensor, etc. But none of the major mechanical systems show ANY signs that the car is near the end of its life.

The engine layout is simple enough so that most tasks are not too difficult with a competent mechanic friend's help.

All in all, I love this car, I feel like it will run for a long time as long as I take care of it, change the oil every 3000 miles, and make sure the turbo gets a chance to spin down after driving.
