1998 Chevrolet S-10 LS review from North America
"Economical and powerful little Chevy"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The common S-10 problems:
Oil coolant lines are seeping at the connection points, soon to fail. WATCH THEM!
Water pump replaced at 65000 miles.
(I went through three water pumps on my old 2.2 liter S-10)
Air conditioner replaced at 65000 miles.
I have cooling system failures because I drive in the hot deserts of Arizona.
Windshield wiper weirdness.
Rough idling.
The truck makes a odd vibrating/whine noise at various speeds and in all gears. I think the throwout bearing is loose.
General comments?
Strong, fast American truck with typical American maintenance problems.
The 4.3 liter Vortec is a great powerplant. I don't anticipate any problems with it.
The newer S-10 (1998 and later) trannys and clutches are MUCH better than the old (pre-1998) units, but still aren't the best.
