1990 Nissan Pathfinder XE review from North America
"A real workhorse that never dies"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Very little outside of routine maintenance has been required. New brakes and tires, of course. I replaced one fuel injector, after forgetting to use Sta-bil fuel stabilizer while not used last summer.
Non-routine items:
Replaced control panel for the electric windows. Fixed locks when auto-locking stopped working. One seatbelt, but that is because my dog chewed on it. That's it. Awfully reliable.
Oh, the nerf bars had a tendency to rust - have replaced twice.
General comments?
This is the best workhorse I have ever had. Roomy and comfortable. Longest I have ever owned a car. OK, so it drives a bit like a truck, not a sports car, can feel a little tippy on the curves, but what do you expect from a first generation SUV? It is really good on snow and the 4WD clicks right in when asked to.
The only ding that I would give this car is on the level of power of the engine. It is all right with the manual transmission, but don't expect to break any acceleration races. The flip side of this is, that the fuel economy is very nice for a SUV.
Each year, I consider giving up this "carpool" workhorse for something newer. Each year, I can't justify it as this works so well, and costs so little for the room. Even the body is still in good shape. I'll drive to 200,000 miles, most likely.
