1999 Ford Escort LX review from North America
"Fuel-efficient, low maintenance, reliable vehicle"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
An inspection of the inner surface of brake drum revealed some amount of wear and tear @ 60,000 miles.
Despite wear, brakes function properly, but make a minor sound when released from stationary position.
General comments?
The car is exceptionally reliable. Considering the fact that I bought it used and cannot vouch for the treatment it had received prior to my ownership makes it an even more noteworthy that this car has required nothing more than the regular oil change in addition to a radiator flush and serpentine belt replacement @ 60,00 miles. Even these could be routine procedures that might be required on any car with similar age. Since I am not mechanically well versed with cars and this being my first ever, I can't make any unequivocal statement though.
The car gives excellent mileage if driven properly (approx 29 to 30 miles in the city and upto to 33 miles per gallon on the freeway).
Due to the light weight of the car, it bounces around a bit when driving at 70 to 75 miles on substandard freeway roads, but on better surfaces the ride is quite acceptable.
Maneuverablity of the car is excellent as it enables parking in tight spots and allows for quick u-turns with its short turning radius.
