1992 Toyota Camry GT review from Jamaica
"A speedy high maintenance nightmare"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Engine blew a head gasket destroying the cylinder head.
Steering Rack leaked beyond repair.
Left Axle.
Left Constant Velocity joint.
Numerous exhaust leaks around the catalytic converter area.
Exhaust flex pipe needs to be replaced.
Strut mounts fell apart.
Radiator rebuilt due to several seam leaks and contamination.
Door handle broke. The other three were already replaced by former owner.
One blown speaker.
Both front control arms collapsed at the bushing.
Window switches had to be rebuilt due to black sooth obstructing the contacts. I was told it was normal to happen...
Air conditioning compressor.
Three sets of front rotors and pads - they keep warping. These are the OEM rotors so not a cheap knock off.
Speedometer wire snapped.
Starter.
Climate control console had to be rewired.
Alternator went.
The paint has completely fallen off (sun burnt) on the hood, roof, spoiler and upper tips of the door frame. All that in 2 months from a like new condition.
Transmission developed skipping, slipping, jerking problems in December. It happens while in gear, and not while shifting gears.
Transmission overdrive fails to engage.
General comments?
This vehicle has turned into the worst nightmare I can conceive to own.
The GT model came with a beefy 3SGE engine which is probably the only reason I haven't given up on the car, even though I had to change that engine.
Can leave just about anything in the dust in 2nd gear, as it pulls like it has well over 220hp.
Has no low end torque. Off the line performance is abysmal.
Fourth gear power is mediocre at best.
Loaded with every creature comfort except power seats and leather. Definitely a good car for long hauls. I have stacked over 11 hours in it in a 24 hour period and was just a little stuff in the end.
I would not recommend a Camry or a Toyota to anyone. They seem to be built with a life expectancy of five years. They hold up initially, but fall apart, literally, after that.
I cannot possibly express how disappointed I am with this vehicle, but it was a great eye opener into Japanese auto engineering.
