1989 Ford Probe GT Turbo review from North America
"Why does everybody want to race my 89 turbo probe???"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
I have had the ford gt turbo for two years in whitch I have used it for a stock race vehicle Therefore keep in mind that it is constantly under wear and tear as a race vehicle and as a daily driver.
In this two year period I have changed.
(the front tires they wear out quickly the car has a great amount of torque on take off and usally gets away with a bit of wheel spin) cost raceing wise 3 sets of tires a season of corse not new 60-70 dollars cdn
i have replaced the cluth @850 dollars cdn as well as the transmission @ 1250 cdn balljoints @ 26 cdn as well as the dreaded turbo with new blow off valve 1000 cdn and many small extra brakes rotors etc @ a total cost of 500 cdn, but as for this cars use this is normal the way I drive.
General comments?
I love the cars handling ability! with a fraction of a larger size tire and as long as the programmed ride control is in check this car manages to stay glued to the road nicely in steep turns. It has little body dive considering a turbo injected take off, and has lean dive when the brakes are used in an emergency situation, along with the ABS (as long as it is in check) the lean dive effect I find help to slow the car in fast situations.!! ie not rearending the tard, who decides he absolutly has to use the full petal in a not so mean curve.
The turbo is great in winding the car out when the stock pressure valves are replaced to get the full effect of 12psi, and in my oppinion if you have to pee really bad and the guy driving the turbo probe youre in guns it its time to change the undies. But seriously this car does heat up it's a turbo naturally and this can cause the main bolts on the engine to be a bit tricky to turn be very cautious. Although we love the machine shop its no place to meet women and the air I hear isn't to good for you in there. Keep the glycol mixture in the radiator at a superior mixture than the water I find that it help dramtically to the tune that my temp gauge hardly moves, only enought to indicate it works, then again I work at a major airport and am able to buy the real good stuff for my radiator type 2 some performance shops sell it but it will cost you $$$$$. And finally the interior rocks cept for the radio unit and the cigarette lighter its all good.
