1996 Nissan 200SX review from UK and Ireland

"SX on wheels !"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Nothing.

General comments?

I wanted to replace my integra type R with something a bit more civilised, but still pretty quick. I saw this SX and fell in love. It has a full service history and is unmarked inside and out.

Its reknowned as being an old man's boring sportster, but I must say I think its very handsome in solid red. The Boot is a fair size, and the cabin is very comfortable and spacious up front, but for tiny children only in the rear.

The seats are very comfortable and supportive, and the dash is a classic Japanese design in my opinion. It has aged hardly at all in the 7 years since it was new. It's a ergonomic masterpiece.

The SXs engine is a lazy, torquey lump, but the car can certainly pick up its heels if you boot it. Its not as quick as my old Integra type R, but not far off and the power is much more usable than the hyperactive VTEC unit in the integra.

The handling is more than acceptable, though body control is less than the Teg; however the ride is a lovely compromise between sporting firmness and comfort that I find most acceptable.

The steering has great feel, in fact it may be the best power steering I've ever used. Control points in leather are beautifully weighted and tactile, and the gearbox especially is quite lovely in its action.

It cruises in silence at the legal limit, yet can be good fun round twisty roads too. I was warned that the car can be tail-happy in the wet, but I have found this to be untrue unless foolishly provoked by adding a lot of throttle in second when on full lock in the wet for example.

I'd improve access to the rear seats (the front seat backs do not 'remember' their previous settings - an annoyance) and add a better stereo, but overall its avery practical sports coupe. I almost chose one new back in '98 when I eventually chose an impreza turbo. I think I made the right choice then, the SX has everything I need right now.

A fast, good looking, reliable car with a lot of personality for nonconformist petrolheads everywhere!

Highly recommended.
