1999 Dodge Ram Pickup 2500 Quad Cab 4x4 review from North America
"Good for the first 100k then watch out."
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Brakes approximately every 30,000 miles.
AC need recharged at 75,000.
Rubber window sill strips rusting- If I replace them the cost is $50.
Rust on the drivers door at 80,000 miles. Fixed under warranty.
At 103,000 I lost first gear- $2300 to rebuild the transmission.
At 107,500 I had to replace the front ball joints and a rotor, $650.00.
At 108,000 the AC quit working. The AC core under the dash is leaking. Estimated repair cost is $950.00.
Minor electrical problems constantly.
General comments?
I was very happy with the truck for the first 100,000 miles. With the diesel engine I am averaging 19 miles to a gallon. It pulls our travel trailer well and is very comfortable on trips, at least in the front seats.
I had the rust on the door fixed under warranty by a dealer. I took them 2 weeks to complete the job. The paint didn't match very well and the interior had several scuff marks. To top it off, the dealer dented the rear bumper and refused to accept responsibility.
At 103,000 the transmission went out. I am told the diesel has too much torque. Cottman rebuilt the transmission and said I could expect to get 50k to 75k out of the rebuilt one. I inquired about a new transmission and as told that Dodge still has not fixed the problem.
Two months later no AC. The put dye in the system and found the core which is located under the dash needs replace. I have heard this may be a recall item. I am looking into to this.
New tires at 107,500. The tech informed me that both ball joints were shot. I had my regular mechanic replace the ball joints. He also replace the rotor on the left side.
By the way, I had to take the truck back in to have a leaky value stem replace on the new tires and one of the service personnel ran the side of the truck it overhead door jamb.
I had planned to keep this truck for a long time. I fully expected to get 250 to 300k out of the diesel. I feel the engine will make it, but at this rate everything else will have been replace. I have lost faith. I hope I can get a new truck (not a Dodge) before there is another major repair required.
