1984 Dacia 1300 L review from Romania
"It's a car that needs a lot of attention before offering a good ride"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Well, basicaly everything that could have gone wrong did.
I think I have changed everything, except the body, in it.
The engine was a wreck when I bought the car second hand.
The clutch was a mess. The pieces wear out very quickly.
General comments?
Those are the problems of any 13xx Dacia. But all of them can be fixed.
Very good road holding, I changed the brakes and put in servo-brakes.
I also changed the engine, and put in a 1300cmc engine for Dacia, but the Borgo set, giving it about 10-15 horsepower.
Thus, it is a preetty nervous car, and with the help of my 4 long steps gear box, the overtakes around the country are a real thrill. It gets in the second gear up to 80 km/h, but the acceleratin forces you to change it up to 65/70 km/h because it does not get enough gas and air, and it slows down. A twin carburetor change wouls solve this problem (a compressor would be even better). I heard you can get the horse power to get from 54 (or 65-70) like on my car to get up to 100) by doing this. Also in the 3rd gear the speed gets up to 110 km/h, and goes smoothly in overtakes up to 100 km/h (at least that's the way I do it). In the fourth gear at the change at around 100 km/h the car (my car) gets preety good acceleration, and it goes steady and tough up to about 130 km/h, where you see a decrease in acceleration (because of lack of gas), but it still goes up to 155 km/h.
The top speed is not very good, but the acceleration is preety satisfactory on this Borgo engine.
If you wanna see some faces really amazed, you should take it of road, where (even though it has forward wheel traction) it really preforms in a good manner).
One of the biggest problems is the vibrations and the noise of the car at high speeds. That was a real challange for me. I put silicone and thicker carpets, tried to equal all the wheights
and it's preetty much gone, the only time I can feel it is the first seconds of going 90 km/h after a long, and slow urban run. But after a few minuter I hear nothing.
