2003 Ford Focus Zetec review from UK and Ireland

"Still the best small hatch on the market"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

No faults (touch wood)

General comments?

Has exceeded every expectation.

115 PS TDCi engine is a cutting edge unit with all sorts of modern gadgetry like variable nozzle turbocharger, dual mass flywheel and common rail injection. On the road it translates to high gear punch which is almost the stuff of exotica, and a performance and refinement (once warmed) standard which has actually prompted the question "is this really a diesel?" from more than one passenger. 250 NM of torque peaking at under 2,000 RPM means it will squeeze you firmly back in the seat from 50 mph upwards in top whilst its 48 mpg average gives a reliable 520 mile range from a tank which even run as low as I've dared, has never taken more than 49 litres (£38) to refill. And I don't drive gently.

The Focus chassis remains the only choice if you're a keen driver. I drove a Golf GT TDi when looking at this car and it cannot get near the Focus dynamically. I still prefer my old 306 ultimately, but the Focus gets closer than anything else. Turns sharply, steerable on the throttle at the limit, and with steering feedback that shames anything else in this class. Rides beautifully too. There must be something in this "Control Blade" marketing malarkey.

The car has been reliable and seems well built. Dealer service is good in terms of the work they do and the cost (12,500 mile service was £102) and streets ahead of Peugeot's, but still not 100% there. Courtesy cars can be a pain to get, and you feel very much like a number rather than a valued customer. But I have no firm grounds for complaint.

A great product which I just know I will enjoy driving until the day it goes. Looks good, goes well, costs peanuts to run, is spacious inside, "500 mile stint" comfortable, faultlessly reliable and handles and rides brilliantly. What more could you want from a small family hatch?
