2000 Nissan Altima GXE review from North America
"Decent sober transportation"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The car began to wear the front tires around 30000 miles and required an alignment.
It always had a coarse vibration which was never corrected.
General comments?
Not a bad car, but a long way from a great one.
My previous car was an absolutely bulletproof 1987 Stanza and it sold me on Nissan quality, but the Altima just never lived up to my expectations. It could be because of the automatic transmission or maybe the fact that it was white. Somehow it just never developed any "soul".
The engine rattled until it warmed up which I always figured was valvetrain noise or wrist-pin knock. When it did warm up it always seemed to lack power. Four bangers and slush-box autos do not make for a lot of driving excitement.
It always had driveability problems like road vibration and tire wear plus an annoying plastic-sounding clunk each time it hit a bump. This I attributed to the cheesy hubcaps.
The last straw was when the temp gauge began wandering towards "hot" then darted to "cold" without any other signs of running hot.
Not much to add about exterior styling except to describe it as "egglike" and "Bland-O-Rama".
The interior was tolerable with everything about where you would expect it plus it had a really nice sounding radio/CD player.
