1994 Ford Taurus SE review from North America
"Would be a nice car if it didn't have all the flaws"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Where should I start? The electrical system totally shorted out one day. Since I bought it it has had two new radiators. Believe it or not Ford uses a plastic radiator with a metal core so where the plastic and metal join, that is where the leak starts. The day time running light module has gone twice on this car. Usually the lights just don't turn off when the car isn't running. This happened once when it was minus 40 outside and I had to take half the car apart to get at the stupid module. The lights the light up the 3 and 6 on the radio don't work. The cruise control is over aggressive I think when it gears down or when you hit resume after coasting. It also doesn't gear the car back down after climbing a hill. The SE has the same interior as the Super High Output and it has leather with cloth inserts. Well on the bolsters where the two are put together that seam keeps tearing. Poorly designed if you ask me. It costs $200 for the piece of leather every time you get it fixed so I'm just going to let it rip. The finish on the aluminum wheels is peeling off. New alternator. I would stay for ABS brakes they are pretty crappy. The dash has about five rattles in it. Both front doors creak when going over a bump. The doors also have unique rattles to them. The lighting system melted after I put in Xenon headlights into the clear "crystal" lens because the crappy factory one weren't bright enough. The turn signal selector broke. If you have seen one of these you'll know why. P.O.S. plastic everything. The steering wheel stuff they put on it is cracking and peeling off. The wire in the wheel is also broken so you can twist the top of the wheel. For awhile there it was going through rear turn signal lights like restaurants go through food. The trunk lid leaks snow in in winter time. The power steering pump makes weird noises when it is cold outside. I need a new rack of the steering system. I also probably need new CV joints as mine don't look so great. The rear spoiler on the trunk lid is a piece of junk. It rattles with every bump. The spring in the trunk doesn't raise the trunk lid like it did in my old GL. The fuel cap doesn't thread well anymore. There are a couple oil leaks. It is also leaking anti freeze on a regular basis again.
General comments?
(I also have owned a 1995 Taurus G.L.) This car has a great air conditioning and heater. The engine needs more power for the size of the engine and the fuel it drinks. The more sporter transmission is nicer then that in the GL. The suspension is also nice so you can throw this car into a corner and come out of it not too bad. I believe this car is a money pit if you got all the above fixed. I personally, just put cardboard on the garage floor and let it leak what it wants to.
