1987 Holden Commodore VL review from Australia and New Zealand
"Fast and extremely good looking"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Both master cylinders in the rear drums had to be replaced.
Alternator went.
High beams don't work.
Always blowing interior light fuse among others.
Oxygen sensor went.
Bad power steering fluid leak.
Glove box lock broke, had to break the glove box to open it, it now falls open all the time.
Rear right seatbelt doesn't wind back up.
General comments?
Despite all the problems I've had this car I still want to upgrade to a Calais Turbo.
I've put all the usual mods on this car like a 2 1/5 inch exhaust, custom Genie extractors, lowered Peddars suspension, 16 inch mags, aftermarket steering wheel, 50 watt head deck running large front and back speakers plus two 12 inch sub woofers running off a 650 watt amp, a K&N air filter, a 5 inch cold air induction, its got a lot of Calais options on it like the tail lights, the dash and some of the interior. The car also has a full group A body kit.
It goes hard, but loses a lot of power in the fact that it's an auto transmission, that will be changed shortly.
Sometimes the points inside the distributor cap get dirty and have to be cleaned otherwise the car misfires, I find myself doing this quite often despite buying a new cap and rotor arm.
Despite the fact that the car is lowered it is still extremely dangerous in the wet and I won't let my friends drive it if it has been raining or even looks like it might rain. I advise any new owner of one of these cars to be EXTREMELY careful when driving in wet weather, even on slight turns on an otherwise straight road.
The power steering fluid leak makes a horrible mess inside my otherwise very tidy engine bay which is really annoying. Hopefully a mechanic can fix this problem soon.
After doing a two-wheeled burn out whilst applying the brakes I fear I may have damaged the master cylinders again and so may need them replacing some time soon. Front and rear disc brakes would have been much better on this car.
Overall this is definitely the best commodore ever made, it will pull girls like never before and you'll look bloody cool in it too. It will go hard and long for you if you just give it the little repairs it needs, trust me, it's worth it.
