1982 Audi 80 GL review from UK and Ireland

Nothing - a gem of a car!

My father gave me this car to start my motoring career - he moved onto a Porsche 944, and found that the 80 was "slightly" less enjoyable after that! However, for a 17yr old, the Audi was a great car - it had 4 electric windows, a 4-speaker stereo, front fog lights, a sunroof, "fantastic" performance, and I could get 12 people in it (but we didn't drive it at that point). I was truly King of the School with that car - nipping out at lunchtimes, arriving last, leaving first, it was better than some of the teacher's cars! I was doing really well until a sixth-form guy got a Saab 9000CDE as an 18th birthday present. I hated him for that, but he drove like a girl, so wasn't all bad. Anyway, the car, it was really great, and it survived everything a young driver could throw at it. In the end, it was my dad who crashed and wrecked it - his 944 was in for a service, so he borrowed the Audi for a day, but forgot that it didn't accelerate or stop like the Porsche, so it went through a hedge, and was written off. I cried. And no, he didn't give me the 944 as compensation. Probably not too many 80's of that vintage around now, so unlikely that anyone will be thinking of buying one, but I still remember that car very fondly. Oh, and I lost my virginity in it too. Great days.
