1972 Buick LeSabre Custom review from North America

"A reliable and stylish classic 70's car"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

It has a little rust on the under body.

The rear quarter panels are beginning to rust out.

Runs a bit rough occasionally in the cold.

Front bench seat has started to wear out badly.

General comments?

This car is rather large compared to the newer automobiles that roam the streets. Many have nicknamed it "The Boat", which is not uncommon for a car of its time.

This sedan was purchased new off the lot back in 1972 by my grandfather. After driving it for 7 years he retired it into a garage where it sat until spring of 2000. Coming of driving age and needing a car I was told I could have the old car. The next problem was getting it running again after 21 years of nonchalante storage.

Many parts needed to be replaced as work was done on it. From minor things, such as a couple taillight bulbs, to major things, such as a new starter, tires, and quarter panel mending, all were seen through.

I have now driven this car for a few years and am very pleased with it. Though it may not get the best gas mileage (I get a thank you letter from Texaco each Christmas) or be as small and maneuverable as newer cars I plan to keep this car for a while.

It handles decently, though, and can produce pretty good acceleration. Under the hood it hides a 350cid V8 engine with a 2 barrel carb. It is only listed as having about 160 SAE net horsepower, but I have had dual exhausts put in which has given that a boost.

It is a very roomy car inside and there is plenty of room for everyone and everything. I have used this auto to move furniture, trunks, and many other large and different shaped objects and it has never yet let me down.

It is also not to hard to work on. It has no computer chips or electronic systems beyond human understanding. The engine is easy to work on and replace worn parts. The interior as well is simple and does not lose character when personal touches (a mini disco ball hanging from the inside mirror) are added. Recently I added an 8-track player radio to it.
