2003 Mitsubishi Carisma Elegance review from UK and Ireland

"A lot of car for not a lot of money!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

No faults so far.

General comments?

I have only had the car for a short time. However, after reading the 'What Car?'report on the car, I have to say I disagree with quite a lot of what it says. I read the report before I bought the car from a Mitsubishi dealer. It was a pre-registered (7 months old). The salesman had been using the car for demonstrations etc. He was quite sad to have to sell it (however, his commission cheered him up).

For example, it criticises the car's bumpiness and 'sloppy handling'. I have felt no extraordinary discomfort with this car in comparison too many other similar class car: Mondeo, Astra, Rover. I say the car handles the road very well indeed.

What Car? Says the car is comfortable and I confirm this. However, it goes on to say that there is little room in the back. Again, I have to say that there is plenty of space in the back to sit three average sized adults reasonably comfortably.

With the Common Rail Diesel technology, the performance is outstanding for a diesel engine. There is plenty of power, quick acceleration and with the cruise control, consistent drive capability.

It would be difficult to match the very generously economical fuel consumption and the low CO2 emissions with another car of the same class.

There have been other complaints about the cheap, 'plasticy' feel to the cabin, but everyone who has been in the car have commented how good it looks. The instrument panel is excellent and the data provided is useful and accurate.

The style is sleek and certainly compares well to its competitors. The after sales service is excellent.

If I have to make criticisms it would be that remote central locking is not fitted as standard and the position of the ignition is a bit awkward and needs to protrude an inch or so because the steering wheel hides it away.
