1995 Chevrolet Astra GLS Wagon review from Brazil
"Decent British Family Estate"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Check engine light, went on and went off all the time, without any reason, dealer told me that the car is OK, but why light still keeps going on and off all the time?
Driver's window stopped work and still faulty because, the dealer does not have the sliding electric window motor. Fortunately the window is up and the car is featured with Air-Con.
Knockings from the rear suspension. Complained with the dealer, and no fault was found.
General comments?
It's a great Station Wagon or Estate as it's called in UK.
Very comfortable inside, with good equipment level, nice seats and dashboard, decent luggage and good driving position.
The 2.0 8V engine is plenty of torque and pulls very well the car, even when the air-con is on. Also is quiet at high speeds.
It handles well, although has a tendency to understeer a little bit, especially when it's laden or in the wet.
The ABS brakes perform really well, even at the wet and there are decent passive safe, features in this car: ABS brakes, Protection Bars at the doors and Dual full size Air-Bag, driver and passenger.
Looks nice at metallic red, although it's bit bland looking like every Station (Estate). However, I added some, nice looking 15 Rim Alloy Wheels, and now the car looks gorgeous, even my wife loves it.
Relatively economical. It does 9 Km/L around the city and 10 Km/L at the Highway. I generally don't drive too much fast. The worst Mark that I had with this car, it was 6 Km/L and 8 Km/L.
Not much cheap to run, due it's imported parts, most of them come from UK and Germany, someone are branded with the Vauxhall or Opel logo, like the steering wheel, but at least, it's a far more reliable and solid car than my previous 1995 Fiat Tipo 1.6i.e Hatch 5-door.
The dealer service could be much better. Here in Brazil, the cars were sold as Chevrolet Astra during, January of 1995 until December of 1995 and there are few of these models on Brazil. So it's common that the dealers, does not service pretty well such a car, but the mechanical is basically the same of the Chevrolet Vectra built in Brazil (Vauxhall Cavalier MK3). They seems to be unable to explain me what is going on with the check engine light, that since eight months ago, it does not stops to went on and went off.
