1998 Hyundai Accent LS review from Sudan
"A good car... if you take care of it though!!!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Since day one the car does not start immediately when ignition is turned on, requires up to 3 times.
After six months of owning the car, the battery went dead. Required an expensive replacement.
Ahh! The mayhem that never ended, the TIRES. At about 10K all four tires started to wear badly, usually when driving above 80km a rattling noise can be heard and the car begins to shake.
16K, cassette player died.
At about 30K the car wouldn't start up. The starter made a terrible noise, it required a replacement. Ignition coil replaced too.
From 80K on the car was a pain in the ass, the engine began to tune itself into high RPMs and then low again, push the car hard and it would make a buzzzing noise, mechanics suggested it was air that was sucked into the engine on entry. The car's recovery speed dropped, when doing 100km/h then braking to 60km/h it takes some time to reach a 100km/h again.
From 120K upwards my dad has to put up with a lot of problems with this car, front trans-axle needed repairing, problem with electrical system caused the cooling fan to stop about 7 times, ignition coil needed 2 more replacements, and up until now the most annoying problem is the clutch plate that needed constant replacements - it causes a nasty vibration when starting from stop.
General comments?
This car is very light, handles pretty well around town.
Mileage is great in the first days of ownership.
Performance is satisfactory, off the line this car needs needs more CC to keep up with other compacts of its own class, but from 80 upwards it's smooth.
Very roomy interior and actually much better compared to a VW Passat!!! I was quite surprised to see how a small car like this could have more interior space than a VW sedan!!!
The audio system is quite nice, the factory head unit pumps good bass.
Overall this is a good car, but can run you into expensive problems if you don't care of it. Could perform much better if it got 300cc more and an electronic fuel injection system.
