1996 Toyota Celica GT review from UK and Ireland
"A lot of car for a little money"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Absolutely nothing, just replaced the cam belt when I got it to be on the safe side, other than that I've had zero problems with this car.
A little tapping/knocking noise from the left rear anti-roll bar bush when going over bumpy road sections because I've lowered the suspension, but it's mechanically fine.
Keep up the servicing and I believe that this car will never let you down.
General comments?
As standard the car is super quiet and very comfortable, the seats hug you a bit and the seat panel on the drivers seat goes up or down so you can make it a normal seat or a nice bucket seat.
The rear is a little low on head space, but I think its really comfortable and cozy back there with the high windows.
To get the most out of the engine you really need to get the revs up, I found it quite poor below 3000rpm, but once you wind it up it really fly's. Replacing the box filter, exhaust and removing the catalytic converter with aftermarket parts help it perform better.
The looks are great, massive boot space, surprisingly easy to wash it. It is very long and quite wide though, but visibility is excellent and parking is easy, especially with the electric mirrors for added help when backing up.
Didn't think much of the standard radio unit in the car, a Toyota tape/radio. Love that there is room for a double DIN stereo or twin head units.
If you are looking for performance potential, the Celica has 180bhp as standard, but I feel you will have to pay big money to see much more power from this engine. In which case you should really be looking at the GT-Four model with the turbocharger.
This car retailed at £23000 when new and I picked mine up for £5000 so I feel that I got a lot of car for my money.
You can find air conditioning in many Celica's
my Celica hasn't got air conditioning as I was too impatient to wait for one with all the points I was looking for, I regret not waiting now as the all black interior really heats up in the summer.
