1998 Volkswagen Golf tdi SE review from UK and Ireland

I have just recently bought this car and am very pleased. it is superb for its class and really is like driving a luxury car in se spec. the engine is very smooth and quiet for a diesle and never becomes raucus. it isn't overly fast (0-60 12 seconds) but the torque is superb and allows you to drive moderately, not wanting for performance and still getting average 50 mpg. its handling is fair, grip is good, but the car does not inspire the driver in one on a twisty country route. this equates to excellent high speed ride, and the car combined with this particular engine does not make you want to thrash it anyhow, but just to drive smoothly and briskly. the weight of the tdi means the back end can feel light and scarily can skip out on hard cornering, especially when braking into a corner. I haVE ACHIEVED AVERAGE 75 MPG ON A JOURNEY ONCE AND USUALLY GET AROUND 50MPG.
