1994 Nissan Pickup XE review from North America
"Perfect young driver vehicle"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The things that went wrong with my Nissan were simple. The passenger side door handle fell off. Other than that I can't remember anything at all going wrong with the truck.
It did lack the power and get up and go of a stronger truck as far as horsepower and torque go. The factory timing chain was clacking at 170000~ miles, that's not bad considering they are rated at 80000.
General comments?
Myself, I was young when I got it and still foolish at heart, after several umpteen trips through the woods, high revving from 4000 to 6000 RPM to get through mudholes, and sandy patches it never stuttered. I tried to break this truck, honestly when I look back at it, I did. I remember following a friend of mine down a really dusty dirt road and I ran off into a culvert that was about 2 feet deep and the truck bounced off the ground and slammed my passenger around, but when I got out to check the truck nothing, I do mean nothing was wrong.
I changed the oil around 3000 miles. I can't remember replacing *anything* else at all on the truck, save the factory stereo which kinda sucked, I wanted a CD player.
I rated the truck a 5 in performance because my first vehicle was a 1970 Chevrolet Nova, a hot rodded up engine and it just could not compare to the power.
The truck drove very well, I often found myself doing 60-70 on dirt roads, I even won a three truck line up through a 6 mile stretch in the woods. I had two Toyota's, one 4x4 with 35" tires on it, and one 2wd with basic stock tires on it.
All in all, I put this truck through hell and all I replaced was the timing chain and oil filters. If you are looking for a gas efficient, nice looking (albeit basic looking) truck, go with a Nissan Pickup, also to add if you're buying a truck for a rowdy teenager this is a perfect vehicle, because the damn thing could take a bullet in the block I do believe.
My only negative comments are that it lacked towing power and speed/acceleration.
Drives fine, runs fine, always cranks.
That's a Nissan.
