1991 Geo Prizm Base review from North America

The transmission needed to be replaced at 230,000 miles. The clutch was replaced twice before that, once at 75,000 miles, once at 155,000 miles.

Both CV Axles needed to be replaced at 170,000 miles.

The starter needed to be replaced twice; once at 40,000 miles, and again at 160,000 miles.

It no longer passes New York State inspection. I'm told this is due to a problem with the EGR Valve. This also interferes with the car's performance to a small degree.

The radiator rusted through at 240,000 miles.

The entire exhaust system rusted out and was replaced in sections between 252,000 and 262,000 miles. The muffler, replaced several times before that.

Inside door handles are snapping at the hinges.

The dome light is very dim.

The power steering rack is slowly leaking fluid. The power steering pump has made a whining sound since I first bought the car.

Front right wheel bearings went at 233,000 miles.

For a small car, it handles exceptionally well.

On rainy days; however, it will hydroplane easily since it is so light.

Overall, it performs amazingly well.

For the high miles it has and the way the car still looks, it is an amazing bargain (the new list price was $11,000).

I've taken this car on many long trips (over 3 hours.) and have never had any major problems.
