1996 Nissan Silvia Q's review from Australia and New Zealand

"One of the best kept Secrets from Japan!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Left hand tie rod ball joint need replacing at 72,000 kms. $125 NZD.

All the front wheel studs needed to be replaced as they were damaged. $130 NZD.

Electric Mirrors no longer fold in using the switch.

Motor makes a clicking noise when you put it in gear and drive for the first time. I have done extensive research on this problem and it can be attributed to the Variable Valve Timing that the SR20DE and SR20DET motors have. The part still functions as normal, but will rattle until oil pressure has built up in the unit. It can be replaced by NISSAN for about $1700 NZD. I have not done this yet as the new part will eventually end up doing the same thing anyway.

Sunroof drain hoses drain directly in to the sills of the car. As a result my right hand side sill has rusted out. It's a bit of a design flaw. If you get a model with a sunroof you need to keep a close eye on it to make sure it is draining correctly and that water is not building up inside the body of the car.

All in all the car is very reliable. Only really had minor problems to deal with.

General comments?

I think this is one of the most under rated cars on the road.

The handling is amazing. It hugs the corners like you wouldn't believe.

The rear wheel drive is amazing fun.

Even the Non-Turbo model takes off like a rocket. The Variable Valve Timing makes quite a bit of difference there. You can really feel it kick in at about 4000 rpm.

It has a real sporty look with a reasonable amount of room, it makes for a nice compromise between sports and practicality.

Fuel economy is excellent. I am currently getting about 10kms to a Litre doing mostly city driving.

I would Highly recommend this car.
