1978 Holden Statesman H Z review from Australia and New Zealand
"A Legend in its own right"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
At 136.000 kilometers the engine appeared to be badly worn to the extent that a total rebuild was required, no reasonable explanation could be found for this. The roof developed rust bumps beneath the vinyl whilst under warranty which was rectified, however it has continued over the years to be an ongoing problem requiring constant attention. The Turbo 400 gear box was rebuilt at 205.000 kilometers.
General comments?
These cars are built like a tank and appear to run better if they are not fiddled with, comfort wise they are the ultimate cruiser and on the open road return very good MPG, (When it was new I achieved 28 mpg consistently on long runs). Despite both of my sons learning to drive and ultimately borrowing the car (one can imagine the treatment dished out during this period) it still rumbles along "sans souci" so I think I will just go on replacing the roof.
