1994 Ford Ranger XLT review from North America

"One of the two best vehicles I have ever purchased"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Only the brakes have been replaced. These are expected wear items.

The original radio/cassette failed after 5 years/50K miles; the cassette player was eating tapes.

General comments?

The 4.0 engine continues to run strong with not a hint of trouble. I selected this engine over the 3.0 because of the location of the oil filter, a whimsical, but lucky choice.

The exhaust, shocks, and battery show no signs of needing replacement... amazing when I think back to my 1987 Ranger.

I recently had the 4WD service done to the transfer case, front axles, etc. This was a bit overdue. There has never been a hint of trouble with the push-button shifting or automatic locking hubs.

The original tires (265R/16, Wilderness AT) lasted 65,000 miles; again quite acceptable. I replaced them with Cooper tires; a good value.

I replaced the original radio/cassette player with a JVC radio/cassette/12-CD player from Crutchfield. This was a noticeable improvement in sound quality.

What would I like different? I wish my truck had an automatic transmission, air conditioning (sometimes), and power windows and door locks.

All-in-all, I would buy this truck again in a heartbeat. While new trucks and SUVs look appealing (and I can afford one), I can't see getting rid of something strong and reliable.
