1999 Chevrolet Malibu review from North America
"Do you smell Citrus? I smell Lemon!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
When we got home from the dealership, the check engine light was on. Because it was under warranty we took it to a dealer and they found no cause for the light. After numerous attempts at fixing it, they finally found a part that they could replace, under warranty, thank goodness, and the problem seemed to be fixed.
We have had to replace the brakes and rotors twice, at about 45,000 mile intervals. After the second replacement, the brakes began giving problems within a week again.
A leak in the coolant system was traced to a "manifold gasket" which was replaced. The mechanic blamed the age (138,000 miles), but after the repair, it still leaked. Engine coolant light came on sporadically afterward.
Air Conditioning system quits when it wants to, coming on only when the recirculate button is on. Lately it doesn't cool at all and goes on and off at will (or without cause).
ABS light comes on and off.
Seat belts have twisted and plastic parts have deteriorated badly, drivers side has broken.
At 74,000 miles drivers side power window motor went out. Repair was covered under extended warranty, but dealership did not want to honor it at first.
Front right wheel hub assembly had to be replaced due to loud roaring at 130,000 miles.
General comments?
Car has a good ride, is comfortable and roomy. It has been a good vehicle for my purposes, but the mechanical problems have driven me crazy.
I probably won't consider another GM product for a while.
