1971 Volkswagen Type III Squareback review from Australia and New Zealand
"A Very Good German Car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Good car, only one day it started misfiring, It was caused by a faulty condenser which burnt the contact breaker points.
An easy $15 fix for a new condenser.
General comments?
A Volkswagen Type III Squareback it a very well constructed car.
On rough roads, it is very comfortable because it has Independent Suspension.
It doesn't go very fast, but it is very reliable and starts quickly on a cold morning.
Although it can't go too fast, it's very comfortable at 50-55mph which is how I always drive.
Top speed is 88mph (140kph), but I don't want to try it.
The engine works well with the original 4speed manual transmission, which gives it a bit more power than the 3speed automatic version, but an automatic isn't bad at all, I probably like them more than a manual.
This car turns heads everywhere it goes, not because its fast, but because its so rare to see this type of Volkswagen.
Also it is has a back seat which lays down for extra cargo, and there is also room under the bonnet or trunk whatever you want call it.
This 3 door Stationwagon is also very good on fuel, it uses 8-9 litres per 100 kilomteres.
