1995 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 review from North America
"A Raging Beast!"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Well, I was fortunate not to have to replace the fuel pump. The guy before me spent $700 on that. I think it is because he ran it out of gas though.
I upgraded the front spindles to accept the later model Camaro brakes which are dual piston and have larger rotors. The brakes in my stocker definitely didn't match up to my new ones.
I replaced the passenger side window motor three times. IN ONE WEEK! I bought the motors at auto zone and they must have been defective. Though after doing it three times, I'm down to swapping out the window motor in under thirty minutes.
The turn signal cancel springs broke. The dealer wanted $150 to replace them so I did it myself. It took me an hour.
The driver side window wasn't sealing properly against the weatherstripping and eventually derailed, or something. It was a $300 fix $40 for parts.
Coolant level sensor went out at 90,000. It was more of a nuisance than a real problem. Easy fix though.
And lastly, TIRES! TIRES! TIRES! With over 300 pounds of torque and a six speed its real easy to light 'em up (and real tempting). I just spent over 800 on a new set of tires.
Sticky heater switches (same problem in my 95 chev pickup).
Engine leaks oil out the rear of the intake manifold. I haven't fixed it due to lack of time.
General comments?
I love this car. I have put some mods on it so its no longer quite like stock. It has bigger front brakes, a bilstein spring/shock kit, strut bar, corvette mag wheels and really sticky tires. It handles much better than my mom's 91 vette.
My only gripe is the driveline vibration over 85. I'll eventually fix it, but I'm not sure if it's just the driveshaft or the rear end.
This car is cheap and has a heck of a lot of power.
It is extremely comfortable. I was driving 13 hours a day when I went across the country, and I am 6'4" so I need a little more room than most.
Good mileage on the freeway, not too hot in the city my average is ~13/29.
This car NEEDS an exhaust, I put a flowmaster with cutouts on and it sounds like a BEAST!
My last complaint is insurance. My landcruiser was $100 a month and now I'm well past the $300 mark.
I never would have believed it, but if you want an affordable performance monster this is the car for you. My car is savage. I have run it through the gears more times than I care to count and there are still no major tranny or engine problems. It just seems to take it. Hitting 140+ mph is no problem for this car. I always wanted to go the import route, until I drove a camaro. Now I laugh every time one revs its little motor at the light, and I laugh even harder as I watch them disappear in the plume of smoke in my rearview mirror.
