1983 Pontiac 6000 STE review from North America
"A fine American touring car, but under-supported, therefore cheap to buy, but tricky to maintain"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
At 220,047 miles, the engine experienced some significant failure while my younger son was driving home from college and I had a rebuilt motor installed.
The cruise control failed in '94. It is an of an old design expensive to repair. After one short-lived go-around at repairing it, I've done without.
The a/c still works, but the sensors and wiring are a little quirky, perhaps as a result of the engine replacement.
The CV joints had to be replaced once, but I attribute that to poor maintenance of the protective boots.
The carburetor has required some maintenance, but, despite its complicated nature, performs well.
General comments?
Incredibly, to me, the transmission has lasted all these quarter million miles, with just replacement of a pump and fluid & gasket replacements.
The car was purchased because it outperformed other cars of its era (rated by Road & Track magazine as one of the 10 best in its class) and it's quiet, comfortable, handles very well, has a good sound system (for the times) and an after-market "moon roof".
A very fine American touring car ("STE" = "Special Touring Edition" and suspension and some other parts are stiffer and stronger than the regular 6000).
The very comfortable seats are adjusted mechanically to a multitude of positions, but the mechanism has broken & doesn't work well any more. I found it too difficult to repair or get parts, but have had them re-covered, along with replacement of the headliner.
