2001 Nissan Maxima GLE review from North America
"A great value near-luxury sedan"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Center armrest broken (my fault). Fixed under warranty.
Check engine light came on at 29000 miles. Dealer found faulty ignition coil (I could not tell there was any problem). Fixed under warranty.
Loose bolt on alternator. Engine had a rattle audible around 1100 rpm. I complained to 2 Nissan dealers and both claimed they could not reproduce the noise. After 1 year of this I took it to an independent garage and he found the problem in 30 seconds. Fixed it for $44. If bolt had fallen off it easily could have caused major damage. Lesson learned is that dealers can't be bothered to try to find problems. They don't get paid to look so they won't do it. Never going back to dealer unless its warranty work.
General comments?
Bought this car used (1 year old) for just under $20K, which is a steal for a car of this caliber. So far I am very pleased.
Very comfortable and quiet ride. GLE leans to the softer side (but not nearly as soft as North American cars) which I like. Great highway cruiser. Seats of supportive and are the right firmness.
The cabin is very roomy. The front is very spacious and the rear has loads of legroom. The trunk is cavernous.
Bose stereo is excellent (I play CD's mostly).
V6 is powerful and smooth. Excellent gas mileage too. I'm getting 23 - 24 mpg combined.
