1991 Lexus LS400 review from North America

"A perfect blend of everything a used car should be"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The ac compressor went out at 150,000 miles. The dealer charged me $80 to tell me what I already knew. After telling me it will cost me $3,500 to get it fixed because the whole AC system had to be replaced, I bought a rebuilt one ($600) plus $500 labor, is ice cold now ($1300 total).

-The alternator went out (due to transmission fluid leak) Instead of paying the dealer $400 a friend and I took it out our selves had it rebuilt for $47 and put it back in, a little tricky, but only took about an hour.

-Transmission pump is about to go out.

-Temperature display went out. Found a guy on the internet who fixed it for $250 plus shipping the part to him. The tape player its broken (don't care) I have a CD changer.

-Parts are expensive and so is the labor, specially the dealer. Only been there Once. Just about any auto shop has been able to service the car, save your money and shop around the internet and junk yards for used and rebuilt parts.

-Factory sub woofer went out, still sounds great without it.

- Fog light are expensive, I've had to replace one several times.

The drive front seat leather it's a little worn out, but If you clean the leader once a week and apply leather conditioner, it will last a long time.

General comments?

I remember the first time I drove my car. I felt like a million dollars. Smooth, classy, hard, powerful and beautiful. The car had belonged to a family member who had recently past away in prison, so it had been in storage for 6 years. I drove the car while on vacation from Japan where I was stationed while in the Marines. After driving this car I requested to be sent back to the states just so I can buy it. I bought the car while still in Japan and gave the money to his children ($9,000). The car was in immaculate condition with only 50,000 miles. 5 years later and 113,000 miles later my car still drives the same, I still get the same feeling every time I get in. I can get in the car and drive to California and I know it will make it there and back. While in the military I would drive from North Carolina to New York all the time with a unexplainable sense of security and assurance. I will do multiple 3,000 mile trips without problems. My girlfriend is jealous at my car because I wash it and clean it twice a week. The best feeling is when someone gets in the car for the first time and ask's me "what year is it?" I tell them to guess, but they never believe that my car its 13 years old. I was 11 when this car was purchased, I'm almost 25 and it's still runs smooth and looks up to date (if well maintained). I will never trade my Lexus in. I will keep this car until I die. I burned a couple of Camaro's and Mustangs at 140MPH and embarrassed some friends. I'm a car enthusiast, I have either owned, drove, or read about almost every car there is, and none compares to a Lexus LS400. This car it's truly a classic. This is the only car where miles are only good for oil changes, and not mattering how old it is, it outperforms, outlast, outruns most cars on the road yesterday and today. The next project on my LS400 it's a paint job. The paint its fading, but still looks great. I don't undestand how people can tint the windows on this car, and put huge rims that take away from the uniqueness of this classic car. After a while those things make the car look older and outdated. Leave the car the way it is, it will never look old as long as its clean. And not to forget, it gets lots of numbers (if you know what I mean).
