2002 Hyundai Coupe FX review from Greece
"An affordable, well-made, good-looking coupe which is honestly very good for its price"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
The electric window on the driver's side occasionally didn't open after a year and a half. Apart from that I've had no problems with the car whatsoever.
General comments?
The exterior design of the car has had a lot of thought and attention put into it resulting in a unique and stunning car that still manages to make heads turn even after 2 years of ownership.
All of the exterior parts, both plastic and metal, are very tightly and robustly fitted together producing no noise even after 2 years of hard driving on the really bumpy Greek roads.
The interior design of the car is definitely functional and well equipped, but not quite as impressive as the exterior. The are a few nice touches like the aluminum finish and the red back lighting of the instrument panel, but overall, it suffers from an overuse of black.
The quality of the materials used for the interior ranges from good to very good with the only exception being the middle part of the console that extends from the gear stick to a small cabinet doubling as elbow support, which feels really cheap. The interior doesn't produce any noise or rattling after 2 years and is as quiet and robust as the day I bought the car.
The handling and breaking of the car are impeccable and combined with the comfortable bucket seats, which give a good driving position and great support to the driver even during hard turns, manage to create a very enjoyable driving experience. Both the handling and the brakes have stayed consistently good through the 2 years of ownership.
The 1.6L engine can certainly be described as efficient, but nothing more than that. On the one hand it has enough power to move the car smoothly without making it feel too sluggish or heavy, but on the other hand it's not really a sports engine and does little to justify the sporty image of the car. Nobody really expects a 1.6L engine to be a high performance sports engine though. You have to be fair and judge it for what it is.
For its size, its powerful and flexible enough, producing 105 hp and it delivers a smooth ride. It has the advantage of being the latest version of a long line of 1.6L Hyundai engines which means it has been redesigned and optimized many times through the years. I haven't had any mechanical problems with it whatsoever and it runs as smoothly as the 1st day I drove the car. Also, it's extremely economical. If you're really interested in performance though, you should probably opt for the bigger 2.0L or 2.7L engine.
Overall, this coupe definitely delivers, especially if you consider the price of any of the versions of this car. It has helped to significantly improve the image of Hyundai as a quality manufacturer. I know that many people, including myself are very satisfied with it and would surely consider purchasing another Hyundai model in the future.
