1996 Ford Escort LX review from North America
"A good value used (under $3000) that should last as long as any higher priced US car out there"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Replaced brakes 2x in 2 years.
Light on shifter is out.
Computer problem caused Check Engine Light to come on when there was no problem.
3rd cylinder spark plug and coil went bad @ 79,000mi.
General comments?
For it's size and engine, this car is very quick and zippy. It can keep up with most V6's off the line and has no problem coming up to speed. It blows away newer Caveliers that I have driven.
The drawback with this car is that it is nothing special inside. If anything, parts of the interior are annoying. I bought this car used with a cassette player, and due to the oddly shaped console, I can never have an after market cd player installed. Also, the back seat is rather small for most adults. You can only really fit 2 people comfortably, and the only way you will get 5 college kids in it comfortably, is if they just happen to be midgets.
Overall the car is worth the money. It's not going to impress anyone with it's looks (although the contours of it are NOT ugly at all), but most passangers will be suppried at its pickup and quickness. If you just need something dependable (have only put about $300 into the car due to problems) modern, and yet quick at the same time, this is a good bet.
