1994 Ford Ranger Gold Edition review from North America

"It's an awesome four wheel drive vehicle, but it needs heavy repairs every year"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Clutch needed replacement at 90,000 miles and again at 180,000 miles. Needs new master cylinder at 186,000.

Radiator needed replacement at 120,000 miles.

Heater core needed replacement at 120,000 and needs it again at 186,000.

Drivers side window needed replacement due to track problems at 120,000.

Replaced thermostat several times, but needs another new one.

Speedometer has had problems reading accurately at higher speeds most of the time I've had the vehicle.

Tires need replaced every year at a cost of about $500. They spin in the rear due to a light rear end and the power steering grinds the rubber off in the front.

Needed heavy transmission work at 120,000 miles.

It needs about $2400 a year in repairs.

The rear end slides even on dry pavement because the rear end is so light compared to the front end. This is even more tricky on wet pavement and snow.

The air conditioning started to stick on at 120,000 miles so I disconnected it, although it still works.

The four wheel drive doesn't engage all of the way sometimes and it knocks badly when the shifter is not in a perfect position.

General comments?

The interior has stayed in great shape despite heavy wear.

The four wheel drive has worked very well.

Plenty of power left in the engine.

I've hauled a lot of heavy loads and some trailers.

This vehicle would compare to a lifted Jeep Wrangler for off-road use. I have taken it too many extreme places where only wranglers with 33 inch tires go. I only have the stock size tires. This is one of the best off-road vehicles I've ever driven. It takes rough roads at high speeds and makes the bumps smooth. It's hard to get this truck stuck, but it slides off the trail easily because it is light in the rear. I prefer this vehicle over all others for long distance driving coupled with four-wheeling.
