1991 Citroen AX 1.0 E review from UK and Ireland
"Great fun, but marred by poor build quality and shoddy brakes"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
O/S drive shaft failed an mot due to the rubber gaiter splitting causing it to vibrate and wear. fixed this with a replacement from a scrappy, cost £25! Now the N/S shaft has gone, will replace that soon.
Dodgy battery connection caused the car to cut out a lot. Very scary when driving at night because the lights went out completely! Had to replace negative battery terminal to sort this.
There is a dodgy contact to the reversing light.
Every so often the car hesitates. I have no idea why, because it is when the engine is hot or cold.
General comments?
Being a small city car, it isn't the strongest thing in the world, especially as I live in the pothole-filled country. this seems to put a little too much strain on it, as the suspension is causing me no end of hassle. However, considering it only has 45bhp its surprisingly nippy with only one or two people in it, and makes great fun for blasting around the lanes! Its also surprisingly good on the motorway. OK so its not quiet, but it will happily cruise at 85, and when really pushed I've hit 105, believe it or not! Not recommended in cross winds though. However, once you start putting people in the back it all goes downhill. it is painfully slow, which is fair enough considering the engine, but more worryingly the usually sharp brakes become weak to the point where it is dangerous. as well as this, the rear suspension will bottom out on every single bump, making for very scary corners and a spine-shattering ride. Oh, and don't lean on the bodywork because it dents ridiculously easily. It handles fantastically when empty, the soft suspension tracking the ground with chewing-gum like stickiness, but I wouldn't recommend this car if you have friends! I have to drive 4 people 20 miles to college and back each day, and its not fun. I'm selling mine soon for a 1.4 Astra, something slightly faster and more solid! will miss it though.
Oh yeah, don't expect the heater to do anything in the winter, and overtaking anything doing more than 40mph just isn't going to happen unless you've got about 3 miles of straight road.
