1998 Plymouth Neon Highline review from North America

"This car is reliable, fuel efficient, sporty and well worth the price"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The head gasket developed a leak at 100,000 miles and was replaced preventing a blow out.

The engine overheated when going over hills but the problem was fixed for under $20.

The brakes are noisy when they are cold.

General comments?

After replacing the head gasket with the new MLS head gasket ($200 dollar repair) the car has run flawlessly.

I don't mind that the head gasket developed a leak because at 105,000 miles many things such as the water pump, drive belt, old gaskets, etc. needed to be replaced anyway for preventative measures. Replacing the head gave me an excuse to tear into the top half of the engine and take care of what a responsible car owner should replace.

The overheating was caused by a California emissions shield placed in front of the radiator. I have no idea why it was there, but taking it out solved the overheating problem easily. Also, a lower temperature thermostat can be used in place of the original and is easier than making pie to put in.

The rear seals are beginning to leak a little, but that is what happens with high mileage vehicles.

The engine runs great and has a very sporty feel.

The interior is very roomy considering the size of the vehicle.

My transmission responds perfectly and I have no complaints.

At 115,000 miles I still get great gas mileage.

This car is a deal considering the price. I haven't had a single problem for 15,000 miles.

I owned a Honda Accord before and had nothing, but drivetrain problems. At least with the Neon the problems are minor and easy to fix.

For those out there who think their Neon is no good, replace the bad parts with lifetime warranty and excellent parts and you won't have a problem. Keep up the maintenance and don't abuse the car and it will take care of you nicely. It isn't a bad car, it is the neglective owners that make it one.
