1986 Toyota Cressida GLX-i review from Australia and New Zealand

"Overall I say this has to be the best "Grandpa" car you can get"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Alternator needed replacing, however no Cressida one could be found so a Subaru one was modified to fit. Since then no problems have arisen with it.

Shocks are a little soft so cornering too hard is somewhat unwise.

3 major oil leaks. (Sump, Rear oil main, and Crank shaft all at once).

I got wedged onto a poll so right doors are both mashed flat.

General comments?

This car was accuired from my girlfriends father.

At first I was a bit worried about buying a car that was made in 1986, however I was very quickly reassured once I was behind the wheel and driving.

I used to borrow my mothers Holden Commodore, and our Cressida handles much better by far, it's engine sounds better and is actually without being biast seems to be more powerful.

The Cressida has power steering, power windows, power mirrors, sunroof, disk brakes, cruise control, 5M-GE engine that has given many other cars including BMW's a run for their money.

I never thought of myself as a rev head, but since I have been in this car I have become greatly interested in restoring it to it's former self. It's 2.8 litre 5M-GE engine, as above, gives many other cars (of similar age and some 90's models) a hard time keeping up. Once I hit 80km/h it seems to hit another gear and accelerates rather quickly.

Even know the car still has the 3 major oil leaks, and has done for nearly 20000kms, it has not had anymore problems (except a new oil filter). I am amazed at this as usually such a problem would great more as you neglect it.

Very comfortable, front seats adjust to just about any position you desire. Unfortunantly back seats are designed for smaller ppl and when your 6 foot tall they are a bit too uncomfortable.

Fuel's not so bad, around town it averages on about 6-7kms per litre, but on highway or freeway it averages on about 10-11kms per litre.

This Car has awesome performance, as above the shocks are a little soft so hitting a corner too fast tends to drag the mud-flap into the road (not a good idea). Power steering makes up for the shocks and gives it a much better turning circle then say your average "Datsun look alike corolla".
