1999 Chrysler Concorde review from North America
"Wonderful car, but the reliability does not inspire confidence"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
At approx. 10,000 km, the following items stopped working, and were fixed under warranty:
Like every other Chrysler of this vintage, the driver's side power window stopped working.
Both remotes broke.
The power trunk release broke.
The wind deflector for the sunroof was sticky.
Also, the windshield has distortions in the glass at both sides and at the bottom. I have driven other Chrysler cars of this design and it seems to be present in all these Chrysler cars. While it is not a problem, it is a bit distracting and something I have never seen in a car made since the 1950's.
General comments?
This car was bought new and is driven by my 74 year old father. Since he drives very little these days, the car has only 23,500 km (about 15,000 miles) after 6 years of ownership.
If we knew at the time how unreliable some of these cars are, we may have bought something else. Realistically, the problems it has had were disappointing, considering the low mileage when they appeared.
Hopefully, the car will hold up until my dad gives up driving.
However, I do like the function and performance very much. The steering and brakes are exceptionally precise and communicative. In hard cornering and braking, the car performs very well, especially considering its size and considering that it is not intended to be a "performance" car, like the Chrysler 300.
The ride is firm, in a sporty way, but very comfortable. Ideally, with 3 people and luggage, the suspension damping is not quite firm enough, allowing just a hint of too much suspension rebound or bounce over larger bumps. However, with a lighter load, its just about perfect.
The 3.2 liter engine is very smooth, quiet and powerful. It would be nice to have a bit more power at low revs, but once the engine spins past 3500 rpm, it is more than adequate.
The interior is very well laid out and all controls are easy to use. However, I would prefer that the steering wheel be closer to the driver.
The back seat and trunk are simply huge and roomy.
Overall, it is a terrific and very satisfying car, but I am concerned about its long term reliability.
