2000 Hyundai Accent review from North America

"Why did Hyundai even start making it?"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Since owning the Accent, the transmission has completely stopped working. First, it started out that when accelerating, it would not shift, and my RP/Ms would skyrocket into the red zone. To fix it, I had to let off the gas, then pump the gas a bit and then it would shift.

The motor also sounds like it is a standard, but in fact it is automatic.

Mine is a hatchback, and the divider for the top of it just fell off one day, not because of wear and tear, it just disconnected and it will not go back together.

Also, the cassette deck that it came with started malfunctioning a couple weeks after I bought the car. Half of the preset buttons have stopped working (and this isn't because I pound on them, the connection in the deck just let go one day).

Finally, with the lack of power, you pretty much need a head start to pass anyone on the road. It's the slowest accelerating car I've ever driven.

General comments?

My sister owns the accent, not me, but I still drive it once in a while and I can't believe the problems she had with it. My dad's a mechanic, so really it doesn't cost anything to fix it, but she insisted on buying the piece of junk...

This is a bad car to buy. You'll eventually spend more fixing it than you did to buy it.

Keep in mind that a car that is only 5 years old should not be so inexpensive if nothing is wrong with it. You may think you're getting a deal, but really you're getting a great deal of trouble.

I still have my Buick, which is 8 years older than the Accent and I've had less problems with that thing, which, you would think wouldn't be the case.

If you're going to buy a Hyundai, do NOT buy anything cheaper than a Sonata. You'll be sorry.
