1993 Peugeot 405 Style review from UK and Ireland

"Fantastic old servant; almost immortal"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

Battery (my fault, took a battering -excuse the pun - as you can imagine over the winter)

That's it!!!

General comments?

Where do I start with Dot... First of all, the old lady is still alive and kicking, and will be for a good while yet. I acquired Dot in November 2004, after being frustrated with the constant breaking down of my 309 GL, which was my first car at 20 yrs old. As quick and nippy as it was, the reliability (or lack of it) was a major problem, so it had to go.

At the time, I did do a fair bit of travelling, so a diesel was on the cards. My dad's had two 405s, a 1.6 GL and a 1.9 SRi, and I've had an affinity for them, so it was a natural choice.

On first getting into the car, it felt like a spaceship!! Being a grand height of 5'4'', it's not hard to see why. I parted with 350 pounds, and the car was mine.

Not being used to diesel, nothing prepared me for the sound of the damn thing!!! Extremeley noisy, and it felt like the engine/transmission was in a coma, and I tried everything to get it to respond, but I realise now, that diesels are just that: slow.

But the car has grown on me, it's NEVER let me down, and to be honest, I couldn't say when it will finally kick the bucket. I've fitted 6x9 speakers, a CD Player, leather seats, a spoiler and Mi16 alloys, and it's made it look, let's say, 'agreeable'. If you want a car that's reliable, and nothing more, then a 405 diesel is the car you want. It will take you to the moon and back, then to Skegness if you have time :-D.

Long live Dot!!!
