1980 Ford Escort Sport review from UK and Ireland
"Id have one again tomorrow, best car Ford ever made"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Small bit of rust here and there.
New clutch (easy to change).
General comments?
This was my first car, a daytona yellow Escort mk2 1600 Sport. It was in very good nick and I fitted RS2000 wheels and a black RS fishnet interior (very rare now!) It also had the 4 big Cibie spotlamps at the front. As I was a trainee mechanic, i whipped the engine out and put a performance camshaft and lightened flywheel in, in just one afternoon! So easy to work on it was untrue. Great fun in the wet getting the back end out with very little effort.
My only complaint was that it drank a bit of fuel with the twin choke webber carb, but sounded nice with the throttle open!!
I sold it a couple of years later and bought a mk3 Escort Lazer and wish i'd kept the mk2 as it was crap!
I learned soon after that the guy who bought the Sport off me put it through a garden wall and sold it to some guy who used it for stock car racing!! I nearly cried...
Best fun car Ford ever made.
