1994 Ford Taurus GL review from North America
"Maintain it and it will go, and go... and go"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Transmission began shifting roughly 160000 miles. Changing the fluid corrected this problem.
Motor began jerking around. Replacing the Motor and Transmission mounts fixed this for about $140.
Speedo cable broke, haven't got around to fixing it yet, so the actual mileage is unknown.
Transmission linkage is sloppy, maybe this is to the moron who replaced the transmission out of a Mercury Sable. Yes the cars are similar, no they are not the same. The linkage does not line up, nor are the gears the same. At least not with this model of Taurus and the type of transmission the Sable had.
Mass air flow sensor fell off, causing the car to get 8 mpg. Ouch.
General comments?
I love this car.
It's not awful to look at, but it's not a stand out car.
It's not slow, but not a neck breaker either. (Okay, it's a tad sluggish) But when the gas mileage is over 24 (since I repaired the sensor), I understand.
This car is super comfortable and yet fairly responsive to turns, braking, and overall drivability.
The durability of this car is great, or shall I say, the best I've had so far. My Civic must have been a lemon because I became stranded so many times with it. I've owned two Fords so far, and they are the best cars I've had, besides my 308 GTB, but that's another story.
I am convinced that Ford makes the best cars around, just because you can make them last forever. My neighbor's Crown Victoria has 870,000 miles on the original trans and engine, and his T-bird has 480,000. My work colleague's Taurus has 200,000 miles all original and still runs strong. Mine has about 165,000 to 170,000 miles and runs excellent.
Just change the fluids, and put gas in. Maintain these cars, and they go forever.
