1989 Jaguar XJ40 review from Australia and New Zealand
"Everything about a Jaguar is class"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Most Serious:
Left front wheel bearing collapsed.
Front brakes needed re-grinding.
Front bushes need replacing.
Left rear door handled broke.
Not so serious:
Indicator lamp on J-Shift intermitted.
Sun visor clamp snapped.
Drivers chrome interior door handle surround broke.
General comments?
I know the previous owner had trouble with the ABS brake pump and had it overhauled, plus I need to get the hydraulic lifters looked at as the engine is a bit 'ticky' at low revs.
The engine performs amazingly well at high revs - for instance, when on the highway, plant your foot at 100km/h and you're at 150km/h in a heart beat! Great for overtaking, and man does that Jag 6 sound incredible when its pulling!
Trans is very smooth and I've had no problems with the drivetrain at all.
The sound system is absolute rubbish and will require replacing if you intend on listening to anything with a beat (I guess classical music was the intended style).
The worst thing that's happened since I've owned it is getting a warranty of fitness once I needed the front bearings a bushes replaced - cost me over $2000! $600 odd for parts and $1400 for labor! Please take my advice - take your Jag to a qualified mechanic who knows what he's doing! He might charge more per hour, but you'll save in the long run due to experience.
I love this car. Its sexy, a head turner and sounds incredible when pushed. Its expensive to run and maintain, but I feel much better about spending money on a beautiful work of art then some monotone faceless jappa.
