1977 Triumph TR7 FHC review from North America

"TR7 is a real Triumph, you just have to drive it to discover it"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The alternator went, electrical contact points need fussing with from time to time. New tie rod ends. Nothing major, just the usual things you would expect to replace on a 27 year old car. Cigarette lighter and Hazard lights haven't worked since I bought the car, I think some of the wires in that circuit are fried. No big deal though, everything else works.

General comments?

I have really grown to enjoy the TR7. There really isn't anything else like it.

The 5 speed transmission is great on the highway and is probably the smoothest transmission Triumph ever made.

Prior to owning a TR7 I thought it was unattractive, but now I think of it was bold, uncompromising, interesting, and way ahead of it's time.

The plastic dash is well, a little flimsy, but it looks nice and the glovebox is huge.

The interior is almost too spacious for a sports car. It almost has a Land Rover-ish feel to it. I'm partial to being cramped, but most will probably enjoy it. The seats are comfortable and everything is in easy reach.

The car performs pretty well for a sports car of its age. My GT6 was a lot faster, but my TR7 doesn't feel slow. The engine has a nice torquey feel. I have the twin Stromberg set up. The single carb set up might feel a little sluggish.

The TR7 handles quite well and is fairly stiff with it's unibody construction. Body roll and nose dive are more noticeable when I compare it to my GT6 but my TR7 could probably benefit with some new suspension bits, but it's still fun.
