1988 Pontiac Fiero GT review from North America
"Best bang for your buck for a stylish, fun to drive sports car"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Alternator at 36,000 miles.
A/C needed replacement to change to new refrigerant at 36,000 miles.
Ignition coil went out while preparing for mountain run (morning of the run).
Torque converter lockup solenoid went out at 39,000 miles, made the car stall constantly.
One front shock got jammed, had to be cut off. KONI adjustable put in its place (on both shocks up front).
Headlight motor went out at 37,000 miles. Easy replacement.
General comments?
I absolutely LOVE this car. It has its issues, but any 17 year old car will.
Handles great. Very low car. Only car I've seen that was lower to the ground was a 2002 Lotus Esprit. Easy car to handle, likes to stick to the pavement. It's a handful if you lose control, back end likes to come around.
Looks like a Ferrari. Gets MANY looks and good comments.
Fun car to drive, fairly easy to work on (just like any FWD car, has a FWD setup on the rear axle).
Love the mid-engine layout. Only American production mid-engine car. First Pontiac 2-seater.
Interior is rather comfortable if plasticky. My 6'2" cousin can fit in easily.
Gas mileage is a disappointment, 17-18 city and 23-24 highway. I've owned V8's that get better.
